Course description

There are materials that we do not invent. They are there: in a recording, in a file, in a forgotten transcription, in an image that went unnoticed, in the mouth of someone who lived through something that we did not experience… This workshop starts with a difficult question to answer: what does a playwright do when he or she touches something real?

Through working with documents, testimonies, archives and real materials, we will explore the territory where dramatic writing confronts what already exists: how to transform it without betrayal, how to organise it without neutralising it, how one can take a position without imposing oneself. Because reality is not drama, but what we do with it can redefine reality.

We will work on that tense threshold between ethics and aesthetics, between staging and one’s own voice, between being faithful to the material and the need for form. Between what someone said and what you decide to write. Between the document you found and the play that does not yet exist.

The workshop is a space for testing and playing, for students to bring material, analyse it, confront it critically, and write. Embracing risk as a method to build a more conscious playwriting position from freedom.

María Goiricelaya

María Goiricelaya is a director, playwright, and cultural manager. Her work is located at the intersection between stage creation, research and cultural management, understanding theatre as a space for critical thinking and social transformation.

She has created and directed numerous theatre and opera shows for institutions such as the Centro Dramático Nacional, the Matadero, the Arriaga Theatre, the Euskalduna Palace and the Kursaal, among others. Her work has been seen at national and international theatres and festivals such as the Festival de Otoño, the GREC, the Temporada Alta, the Festival Castell de Peralada, the FIDAE in Uruguay, the Festival de Teatro de Córdoba Mercosur in Argentina and the Santiago OFF in Chile, among others.

In 2017, she founded, together with Ane Pikaza, La Dramática Errante, a company from which she promotes projects focusing on collective memory and the critical review of historical and social narratives. The project is also articulated as a sustainable management model that is committed to female leadership and collaborative creation processes.

With a PhD in Research and Creation in Art from the University of the Basque Country, Goiricelaya has a degree in Audiovisual Communication and a postgraduate degree in Performing Arts, with master’s degrees in Musical Theatre and Cultural Management, and has also undergone training at international centres such as the Roy Hart Center, Teatr Piesn Kozla and the Arthoc Project. Highlights among her most recent works are Dysphoria, Filtro, Ni flores, ni funeral, ni cenizas, ni tantán, R&J and Altsasu. Her works explore contemporary conflicts, the critical rereading of classic texts, and the creation of stage performance devices that combine documentary rigour and poetic power.

Goiricelaya is artistic programmer of the Sala BBK and artistic director of the Olite Theatre Festival. Her career configures a comprehensive profile as a creator, researcher, and cultural manager committed to the renewal of contemporary theatre and to more sustainable and inclusive production models.
