The career history of Las Glorias Cabareteras is closely linked to the Sala Beckett. The best and worst creations of Las Glorias have been born between the four walls of the Beckett’s rooms and the sofas of its Authors’ Club. On Saturdays, “on the sly”, without noting anything down in the WIP (saint and sign of this house), between coffee and coffee in the dining room, Las Glorias have built up the repertoire that has accompanied them all these years.

Accused, not without a certain degree of envy and ignorance, of having put out the same show throughout their career, they are now appearing at the Beckett in a single performance. They will finally put an end to the myth, presenting a renewed show full of lights and colours and who knows if maybe with some kind of star appearance? We will find out on 14 July.

“And it is that ability to connect with the here and now of theatre, their stark and honest presence, their talent for recognising the audience in all their virtues and sins, that really makes them stand out among everything that, artistically speaking, is brewing in this City.”
Juan Carlos Olivares (Recomana.cat)

The company

Las Glorias Cabareteras was born in the passageways of the Barcelona metro. With El Molino and Arnau closed and little expectation that any theatre would open its doors to them, its founders decided to start their career as vedettes in the Barcelona underground, specifically at the Paral·lel stop, to remember the old days when Barcelona’s Paral·lel was the Catalan music hall. With this beginning and with no expectations of progressing, La Capitana and Martínez began to perform in “basement bars” and other places of ill repute in Barcelona (even on the steps of the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, paradoxically remembered as one of the low points of their career). Marc Giró, who had never come to see them, signed them up as collaborators on his radio programme Vostè primer and on the Late Xou, where they discourage the audience present.

A story of failure, doubts, and disappointment of two artists who have never taken life seriously.

Gloria Martínez is La Martínez and Marta Bernal is La Capitana. Together they form Las Glorias Cabareteras.
